SUMMARY: From the first bioreactor back in the '70s to the current state of biotech automation: an exciting walk through the history of automation from the early PLC's into the present and future. What's currently happening in automation and where are we going? Will batching be gone forever? Will we all be using single use components in a continuous process? Will we all be wearing Google glasses following instructions from some brainy robot and working with our heads in the electronic cloud? Join us for a visit to the past, present and future of biotech automation.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This program will address information of professional interest to process engineers, automation engineers, and those employed in Manufacturing, Production, Process Analytical Technologies (PAT).
SPEAKER: Rick Pierro, President/CEO and Co-founder, Superior Controls Mr. Rick Pierro is President/CEO and co-founder of Superior Controls, a 25 year, global, automation company with 125 engineers providing custom, validated, automation and IT systems to the biotech industry. Rick also serves on the board of 5 private medical device and power supply companies, the Chairmen of the Board of MindChild Medical (FDA approved Fetal EKG monitoring device), the "Control Systems Integrator Association" board, the "Control Engineering" magazine Advisory Board, the UNH and UMass Lowell, Chemical Engineering Advisory Boards, and is a past President of Boston, ISPE. He is also been a founding investor in three separate biotech OEMs that successfully sold to publicly listed manufacturers to the biotech industry. Rick is also a frequent guest speaker on automation, validation and future trends in automation. Mr. Pierro received an MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lowell-Mass in 1983 and a Bachelors in Chemistry from Boston University in 1981.
Charles Torres, Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer, Framingham Biologics Mr. Charles M. Torres is a Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer with Framingham Biologics, a Sanofi company, previously Genzyme. Sanofi Framingham Biologics is a company that produces rare disease therapy enzymes. Charlie worked for NASA, Glenn Research Center, previously Lewis Research Center, in Cleveland, Ohio designing innovative electronic instrumentation for jet engine research programs. He entered the pharmaceutical world as an Instrumentation Engineer for Schering Plough in the manufacture and packaging of Gentamycin, a powerful injectable antibiotic. He later went on to work for Abbott Laboratories as an Equipment Engineer working with a large automated assembly manufacturing facility for disposable intra-venous sets. Later, he went on to Abbott Diagnostics Products Division as Equipment Engineering Manager and to Abbott Pharmaceutical Products in the solid dosage/tablet manufacturing business. Upon leaving Abbott Labs, P.R. in 2007, he came to Worcester, MA and worked for five years as a Mathematics and Biotechnology teacher at Doherty High School and North High School. Charlie later re-joined the engineering field working as a Process and Instrumentation Controls Engineer in a highly automated manufacturing facility for Tambrands, Procter & Gamble, in Auburn, Maine. He is the proud husband of a devoted "Physics" teacher and father of three young men that also became Electrical Engineers and presently live and work in Massachusetts. In his free time, Charlie is an avid reader, electronics tinkerer and woodworker. Charlie received an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio in 1980 and a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus in 1977.
Joint ISPE/ISA Event
As part of our educational evening on Process Control, ISPE Boston is partnering with ISA Boston, for what we hope will be a regular annual event. Some of the key process control standards commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry were developed through ISA. The International Society of Automation (www.isa.org) is a nonprofit professional association that sets the standard for those who apply engineering and technology to improve the management, safety, and cybersecurity of modern automation and control systems used across industry and critical infrastructure. Founded in 1945, ISA develops widely used global standards; certifies industry professionals; provides education and training; publishes books and technical articles; hosts conferences and exhibits; and provides networking and career development programs for its 40,000 members and 400,000 customers around the world.
ISA Boston will be providing a short overview of their national organization and local section, and will be identifying some of the essential ISA resources for process control.
